After more than two years in development, the Trailmax Mission delivers knobby-like performance off-road, has impressive grip on the street, plus great ride quality and stability everywhere it goes.
The Dunlop Trailmax Mission Motorcycle Tyres have been developed for the long-haul hardcore adventure rider, allowing them to reach all corners of the planet, and still have enough tread depth left to venture off-road.
The Trailmax Mission is the rugged option within the Dunlop trail and adventure tyre range, designed to combine durability for long-distance touring on highways with real off-road performance for globetrotting on unpaved byways. The Tyre features a rugged tread block which have a Staggered Step design on both the front and rear, providing rigidity in the contact patch whilst also enhancing stability and handing. There are wrap-around lugs on the edge of the Tyre add rigidity and durability in rocky terrain, allow lower pressures to be run off-road with less risk of pinch-flatting, they help provide steering stability in sand, mud and gravel surfaces and they have an uncanny ability to allow riders to steer out of ruts off-road, even on the really big and heavy ADV bikes. An additional feature of the tread are deep grooves which offer additional biting edges for improved off-road performance. The tread on the front Tyre has a symmetrical pattern which helps to reduce uneven wear. The 19" size has hollowed out knobs which have been included to crease additional biting edges and knob flex for greater off-road traction. The 21" front Tyre has achieved Dunlop’s performance objectives without this additional detail, as the larger size of the tread blocks provided the desired level of traction without the need for hollowed out knobs. Both the front and the rear have a distinctly higher land/sea ratio with approx. 60% land for greater street performance – compared to the dirt-oriented D606 at 30 percent land ratio.
These Tyres were made using a Bias Construction to meet performance and mileage goals. Bias Construction is generally better for off-road riding as the tread and sidewall are designed as one component. This construction type also allowed for designed to use heavy-duty ply material such as a Nylon, Polyester and / or Fibreglass belts that are like those used in tough touring tyres such as the Dunlop American Elite and Elite 4. As a result of this design, the Tyre can provide excellent off-road performance and stability at high speed, and there are no concerns as the Tyre fitment application changes, as each size will have their own unique changes to maximise performance.
The new compound has been perfectly balanced for performance on and off road, whilst also ensuring that they provide class-leading mileage performance. The tyre casings are designed for traveling large distances with a heavy load at moderate speeds, and to cope with abuse on rough terrain. To ensure long distance comfort, the pattern was optimised to reduce both rolling noise and avoid the kind of vibration that is common for off-road tyres.
This tyre has been developed and manufactured in Buffalo, New York, USA – which has a long track record of building Tyres ranging from high performance racing tyres to premium touring tyres. Dunlop have spent 2 years developing these Tyres, with more than 30 prototypes, and 12 months alone spent on the design of the unique tread pattern. As a result, the Mission delivers knobby-like performance off-road, has impressive grip on the street, plus great ride quality and stability everywhere it goes. During this entire development stage, one of the main goals was durability. Several months were spent piling on the miles - on the street, at the Huntsville Proving Grounds in wet and dry conditions, on gravel roads, trails, tyre-shredding rocky terrain, and every condition Dunlop test rider could find. Dunlop also utilised a high-speed testing oval in to put the Mission through durability torture. The result - Consumers can expect to get double the miles of some of the competitive rear tyres, and more than that from the front. The production version of the Mission rear tyre delivered 12,800 km in testing. *
